Live steam locomotive construction

These articles were originally published in the Gauge O Guild Manual. They cover live steam operation, building, maintenance and photographs of completed models. Most of the tools, materials and procedures are applicable today, but not all of the suppliers details may be current.

Other sources

Live steam is commonly used in the larger scales, but the methods used there do not always scale successfully to O gauge. The Gauge 1 Model Railway Association has published several books on simple starter projects that may be a source of inspiration, and may, with some ingenuity, be scaled down to O gauge:

  • The Project Book - a simple, single cylinder 0-6-0 tender locomotive based on the Midland 4F class, with meths firing.
  • The Dee Book - twin inside cylinders, meths or butane gas fired, based on the SECR D class 4-4-0.
  • The ARM1G Book - twin inside cylinders, butane gas fired, 0-4-4T.

These books are available for sale to G1MRA members and non-members.
