The Tower Collection Blackpool Class 20 Scottish Version

Reviewed by Charles Oldroyd

Ian Atkinson at The Tower Collection Blackpool has kindly provided a sample of his Class 20 locomotive with cab recess for tablet collector, as used in Scotland. The loco has a pewter body and bogie sideframes with etched brass internal bogie frames. It is twin motored with both 8 wheel pickup and drive and weighs in at 4lb 8oz. Consequently, it will haul anything you care to put behind it. We tested it with 8 heavy bogie coaches and a 4-wheeler on the Keighley Club layout, Ravensbeck, and there was no discernible performance difference to it running light other than slower acceleration. Certainly, the loco didn't slow down when hauling the train round the super-elevated 6' radius curves that tax many other locos.

The paint finish on the sample provided was excellent and had stood up to repeated handling very well. Flush glazing in the cab with particularly nicely rendered frames is provided, as is interior cab detail. There is a fan beneath the hood grill but it's non-functioning. The loco looks particularly impressive from the front, the bulk of the prototype's nose being well captured.

The Class 20 is available to order in a choice of liveries and costs £1195.00 ready to run, and is supplied in a substantial, well finished wooden carrying case.
