Bought an MTH Stanier Parcels Van in BR Blue Livery at Telford as no Maroon ones were available. I want to respray it in BR Maroon, what is the correct procedure to start things off, the roof and glazing have been removed, much appreciated your advice.

For best results it will need stripping, then prime then top coat.

I would first try to ascertain what the parent material was and what was used to paint it, but I would be inclined to just paint over the top after giving it a thorough degreasing with something like isoproyl Alcohol but I don’t think I personally would bother to strip it - what’s the point?
If you want to be cautious use an Acrylic water based paint - it might take a few light coats but should give good results.

Sep 12, 2018#4 Buckley10339 The MTH coach bodies are i think ABS mouldings.But as to repainting them i think perhaps a gentle rub down with wet and dry then primer them paint - you will definitly need to remove the coach nos and any other markings and wet and dry seems to be the best way.

A few months ago, I partially repainted an MTH 50' full brake as their shade of “blood” looked too dark to me. I used Bob's simple approach, applying Precision BR coach red by brush directly over the darker MTH shade, which provided a good enough base coat. I added the grey chalking panels to the doors. I left the MTH custard alone and kept their lining. I also resprayed the roof with Humbrol 53 Gunmetal (rattle can), which I use for most coach roofs, and added the black edge to the guttering by brush. After applying numbers, etc (Fox transfers), I gave the bodysides a coat of Precision satin varnish. I had no problems, as you can see:

I would think a repaint from BR blue to BR maroon would need an undercoat for red before applying a maroon top coat or 2 coats of maroon as red paints are bad at covering properly over other colours.

Forgot to mention that the MTH coaches look a lot better with just a spray of matt varnish over the roofs and underframe and bogies.I have done all six of mine and it does improve them without any real major work - apart from masking the sides that is.
