Rattery Sidings is a large mainline layout housed in a purpose built block building. It consists of a double track oval where the return tracks are taken outside the building in wooden tunnels supported on wooden posts. This allows 40ft of straight track to be laid down each side of the room. The baseboards on both sides of the room are 8ft x 4ft modules with a viewing height of 4ft from the floor. The layout is based upon BR(WR) practice in the late 1950’s which allows a large variety of traffic and liveries and includes both BR Standard and BR(SR) locomotives. The layout is being built in 3 stages. Stage 1 was built on one side of the room and consists of a double track mainline running through Devon countryside. Features include the twin portals of Marley Tunnel, a stone viaduct and associated riverside inn, a farm and cottages; and the sidings, which include agricultural traffic, a coal merchant and a builders merchant. The line then passes the cattle dock, into a cutting and under a bridge taking the road from Brent to Totnes. The layout is based upon an actual location but is freelance in design and content. We are now working on stage 2 which is on the other side of the room and consists of a large through station with an overall roof which we call Plymouth Central. At one end of the station is an engine shed which mainly houses local tank engines, the mainline locomotives being sent off stage to a cassette (Laira Shed) where they are turned and serviced. At the other end of the station is an urban branch line terminus and small yard. Stage 2 is now almost complete except for the numerous small detail items which bring the layout to life. These will be added as and when funds and time permit.Stage 3 will be a branch line. This will start at the city terminus and run through Central station and disappear into the outside tunnel adjacent to the main lines to reappear on the other side of the room and on to a new set of baseboards erected down the centre of the room. The branch line will have both WR and SR influence. The final design has not yet been decided upon but it will probably incorporate a small through station leading to a hidden cassette at the end of the line.
