There is a variety of ready-to-run models of steam, diesel and electric prototypes available. These range form £3000 museum standard express locomotives to smaller branch line locos and industrial shunters available for under £200. The latter and also some main line diesel models will negotiate the curves down to 1000mm radius but for the large steam locomotives the minimum curve radius is usually 1800mm. This is an important consideration if you are planning a minimum space layout.

In between the top of the range fine scale models and the small ones there are a number of course scale models, mainly of larger prototypes. These lack the level of detail found in fine scale models.
