The club was founded in 1974 and exists to promote interest in railways in the North Nottinghamshire area. The society now has over 60 members with interests in all aspects of railways both model and the real thing. As part of the Adopt-a-Station scheme and in association with East Coast trains, the club occupies two sets of rooms on platform 1 of Retford railway station. The former Buffet and First Class Dining Rooms form the main part of the premises and are used for main meetings and model railway projects. A second suite of rooms were renovated during the early part of 2010 and now form a workshop area for the construction of more model railways including the clubs new O gauge layout, Idleford Town. The club also organises the annual Retford Model Railway Exhibition each November in Retfords Town Hall and stages regular clubroom open days.
