Workshop Practice

The model railway hobby is probably unique amongst hobbies for the number of different skills needed to be able to make all the related parts of a model railway. To build the baseboards, or if building a garden railway, the hobbyist needs to have some basic woodworking skills as well as skills normally associated with a construction worker.

If making your own locos from kits you need soldering knowledge, metalwork techniques and electrical knowledge to be able to successfully get the loco to work properly. For wagons you need to have plastic working skills, painting and weathering artistry. It is rare to find all these skills in one person, which makes the hobby even more pleasant as it gives us all an opportunity to mix with others and share the work.

This section will lead you to various knowledge articles on these skills.
