Description: A loop and hook system with an “on demand” un-coupling action.
Method of operation: The coupling is divided between vehicles, a wire loop on one and a hook mechanism on the other. With coupling set in its normal mode the vehicles are brought together, the loop passing over the hook. The loop then contacts a dropper on the hook mechanism causing a magnet in the mechanism to rise and lock onto a steel pin. In doing this the hook is raised and can be engaged by the loop. When the vehicles are pulled apart the hook is captured and the magnet released from the pin. The hook is able to drop but cannot whilst engaged with the loop. To uncouple the vehicles are gently moved together and the hook will fall and the vehicles separated.
Uncoupling device: None in the track. The hook mechanism contains the uncoupler.
Modifications to stock: No major modifications to fit the couplings are required. The coupling components are attached by 10BA screws. The height for each coupling is based on the height of the bottom of the buffer beam.
Fitting common to all stock?: The coupling is paired across stock.
Compatibility with scale couplings: Existing 3 or screw couplings remain fully usable, therefore locomotives need not be fitted allowing them to be turned if required. Other non-fitted stock may also be included in the train.
Minimum recommended operating radius: No minimum radii are quoted in the instructions. Tests indicate that it will work down to 1220mm (4ft) radius.
Instructions: An illustrated set of instructions is supplied with each etch set. A height setting tool is included.
Other Comments: The hook mechanism contains a number of moving components and needs care with the assembly. A 4mm version is available which may be suitable for 7mm narrow gauge.
