Kadee #804 or #805 0 scale coupler
Description: A knuckle coupler mounted in a Draft Gear box containing a centring spring. (#804 Delrin plastic: #805 die cast metal.) This style of coupling is given the name ‘buckeye’ in the UK.
Method of operation: The knuckle engages with its twin on the opposite vehicle. The jaws interlock and remain engaged whilst pushing and pulling. To uncouple the trip pin below the knuckle is pulled sideways by a magnet to open the jaws. Once opened stock can be pushed to another location before separating.
Uncoupling device: Strategically sited permanent or electro-magnets. Note due to the lateral polarisation requirements only those magnets supplied by Kaydee can be used.
Modifications to stock: A mounting plate is required to locate the Draft Gear box flush with the bottom of the buffer beam.
Fitting common to all stock: The coupling has to be fitted to all stock.
Compatibility with scale couplings: This system is not compatible with scale couplings. For British rolling stock prototypically using drawhook and 3 link or screw couplings the fitting of this to a model is impractical. The chain will interfere with the knuckle and the rear of the hook with the mounting of the Kaydee.
Minimum recommended operating radius: 4 feet. It can be used around tighter radii but operation is compromised. If the knuckle is extended so that Draft Gear box is proud of the buffer beam then buffer locking can be prevented on tighter radii.
Instructions: A full set of instructions for typical installation and set-up is provided. There is a height gauge for consistent setting.
Other Comments: This coupling is probably best suited to modern prototypes which use a Buckeye coupling prototypically. It is well be suited for couplings between coaches in a rake.
